Strangers in the Land

Who gets to be in America? What does an American look like?

From The New Yorker’s executive editor, Michael Luo, the answer contains cultural complexity and sometimes an identity crisis.

“Many Asian Americans have been otherized, and feel like perpetual foreigners, that’s a common theme for Asian Americans,” he said.

“And another way of putting is that, we feel still, like strangers in the land.”

For AAPI Heritage Month, we interviewed Luo to share his new book "Strangers in the Land."

We talked about the stories behind the writing process, the struggles Asian Americans have endured for centuries, the current political climate, and the importance of creating a diverse environment where everyone feels safe and embraced.
